Dylan Richard is the full-bearded technologist who, as Director for Engineering, quietly led the 40 engineers of Obama for America’s Technology team to victory in 2012. Previously, he helmed technical teams as Vice President of Engineering at skinnyCorp (home of threadless.com) and was a Senior Developer at Crate & Barrel. Dylan lives in Chicago, Illinois, with his patient wife, Sarah, two amazing sons, a cat, and a rotating stable of old diesel VWs.
Dylan is now working to build the future of commerce as Founder and CTO of Modest.com.

Kathi Kaiser is co-founder and partner at Centralis, a Chicago-based UX consultancy. She leads a top-notch team in creating great user experiences for global clients, start-ups, and cultural institutions. When Kathi’s not at the whiteboard or in the lab, she may be found observing users on boats, in museums, at train stations, and anywhere else where the digital and physical worlds collide. Kathi is a frequent speaker on topics in UX, and has served as an adjunct faculty member at the Illinois Institute of Technology’s Institute of Design.

With the recent announcement of the Apple Watch, along with Android Wear rapidly evolving, the popularity of the smartwatch is at an all-time high. Learn the commonalities and differences between these two platforms as means to enhance the smartwatch user experience – from understanding design trends for each operating system, to utilizing the constraints of these small devices.
Ashley is a product enthusiast who is fascinated by how technology translates across different countries and cultures. As the head of product for Modest, she indulges this obsession by working to create awesome shopping experiences on mobile devices and beyond. Previously, she worked on products at Groupon, Nickelodeon and more and has written for a slew of magazines and news outlets. Six years ago, she decamped to Chicago where she lives with her all-time favorites: her husband Jeff, her son Lyle and her dog Bala.

As the world gets smaller, the universe of mobile users is getting bigger. Mobile devices outnumber the world’s population, yet as we design and develop apps from our stateside offices, couches and coffee shops, we often forget about consumers in other countries. In this session, we’ll talk about how to design for other cultures, what our products lose when we don’t and how to find inspiration in the incredible mobile experiences made for international audiences.
Brian is the Lead Android Engineer at Trunk Club, helping Trunk Club members get an awesome styling experience from their stylists. He is passionate about mobile technology and user experience, and you might run into him in design meetups or Android meetups in Chicago. He has been working on Android since its early days, witnessing its evolution from Cupcake to Lollipop. Brian was previously at Motorola working on the Android Platform, and then at Orbitz building multi-brand Android apps.

It shouldn’t really matter if an app’s running on Android, iOS, or web. Each app should work together to provide a seamless experience to the user. But this doesn’t mean that they should be the same. We should embrace the platform and take advantage of the unique features that each platform provides.
In this session, we will go over some main concepts and elements that are unique to Android. We will identify the difference between dp and pixels, explore back buttons and app navigation, and highlight some cool features that exist in Android. I will also share what worked out great when working together with designers, based on my experience as an Android developer.
Mark started Adorable IO a software consulting firm based in Madison, Wisconsin. A software engineer with a passion for simplicity and quality, he was delighted by the power and leverage that frameworks like Ruby on Rails brought to the web development world. His latest adventure has been diving into the world of mobile development using the Ionic framework.

Native app development is hard. You want to take advantage of the unique features of the mobile device, and you want your app to look and feel appropriate to each target platform. One approach to this is to have separate development efforts for each platform with an iOS team and with an Android team. Another approach is to use a framework that lets you build a hybrid mobile app. Ionic is one such framework. Ionic is an HTML5 mobile app development framework targeted at building hybrid mobile apps.
In this session, we’ll explore Ionic. We’ll cover at a high level what Ionic is, how it leverages Cordova, and the basics of creating and developing an Ionic app. We’ll see how to share an app with Ionic view. We’ll look at debugging and testing an Ionic app, both locally and on a real device. By the end of this session, you’ll have a really good feel for what Ionic is and hopefully you’ll try it out yourself!
Mark is a Principal Front-End Developer for Hyatt Hotels. He is a client-side developer at heart, but spends a lot of his time finding better ways for front-end code and UX to play well within large web applications and the teams that build them. Mark was previously at Orbitz where he led the development of the presentation layer for their international platform and got his start on the web at Encyclopaedia Britannica helping launch Britannica.com.

Each new release of the latest phone or tablet comes with it the need to guarantee your site will work on it. All the different devices, screen sizes, browsers and operating systems make it impossible to test everything. Yet nothing compares to pinching and scrolling on a physical device and seeing how your code reacts.
In this session, we’ll look at what to consider when building a test lab of devices on a limited budget, how to make it as usable as possible for your team, and what tools can help with testing when a physical device either isn’t available or even an option.
Sharon is a user experience designer passionate about strategy and organizational change. Currently, she leads digital design and front-end development for Discover Card, overseeing the online experience for over 20 million cardmembers. She also teaches in the Interactive Arts & Media department at Columbia College and co-organizes the UX Book Club of Chicago.

Once upon a time, people carried physical wallets that contained personal identification, cash, credit cards, photos of loved ones, and perhaps a Blockbuster card. Times have clearly changed. Blockbuster is long gone, and now with our physical wallets, many of us also carry smartphones with native functionality and downloaded apps that give ever richer meaning to the notion of digital wallets.
In this session, I will draw on this particular straddling between the physical and digital to discuss new opportunities and challenges for user research focused on mobile experiences. I will share stories of what happened when I asked people to open their wallets to me and the lessons I learned about observation, qualitative interviewing, documentation, and empathy.
Will Hacker is a Manager of Interaction Design at Cars.com, where he leads a team responsible for experience design and usability for a portfolio of consumer-facing automotive shopping, research, and financing products. He is also the author of Mobile Prototyping with Axure 7, and his work has appeared in Boxes and Arrows, Mobile Commerce Daily, Smashing Magazine, UX Booth, and UX Magazine. Will is a frequent speaker at design events in Chicago.

Learn from examples drawn from real applications about the principals behind Material Design and how it adds a new dimension to how we conceive user experiences.
